The process strategy defines and describes current and future goals of business process management and operational processes. It is closely related to the corporate strategy. If the process strategy is changed or if the future process strategy differs from the current one, the processes must be adapted accordingly. Only by adapting the processes to the strategy can it be ensured that the processes correspond to the internal conformance of the company. The development of a process strategy is part of the process management lifecycle.
How is a process strategy developed?
In summary, the development of a process strategy can be described as distributing the company’s goals among the processes and breaking them down. First of all, the existing strategy of the company and its goals must be analyzed. The architecture of the processes can be derived from this strategy and from the structure of the company. Points that affect the process architecture and its basic structure are, for example, the type of process optimization (CIP or complete re-engineering), the introduction of process standards or the outsourcing of individual process steps or entire processes.
Once the process architecture has been developed, a rough overview of the main processes, a process map, can be created. In order to detail the main processes, the processes running in the company must be identified. However, this detailed process knowledge can best be gained by the executing employees or alternatively by means of Process Mining from system data. The employees can be interviewed, workshops can be held or the employees can be accompanied for one day.
Since the knowledge about the company goals and the processes is now available, the company goals can be split and transferred to the individual processes and process levels. This results in operative and strategic goals for each individual process. Key figures can now be defined for these goals in order to check whether they have been achieved. If the process management lifecycle is executed repeatedly, the old key figures and the new key figures recorded or created in this run can be compared with each other.
